Invasion of the mutant zombie movies...and other relaxing diversions.

B Reel Movies at The Belmont Hotel are horrifically fun.

You’ve had a hectic day wandering the halls of the Dallas Convention Center. What better way to unwind than tapping your toes to the exploits of flesh-eating gold miners. Or watching a time traveler battle an army of medieval dead that terrorizes shoppers at a big box discount store. Forget about massages. The B Reel Movies at The Belmont Hotel will certainly make you forget your cares of this world.

“It’s sort of like those old drive-in flicks,” says Clayton Farris, Sales Manager of The Belmont. But instead of pulling up in your T-Bird, you can pull up a lounge chair on our patio or swim up and watch the movie from our pool. There’s even a bar and light food that can be ordered from Bar Belmont.”

Sit right back and enjoy the monsters.

The B movies, all free and shown every other Tuesday evening, are the same campy low-budget, badly-acted films that sent shivers through the 1950s and 1960s, with some more recent cult classics thrown in. “Of course all this badness makes it fun,” believes Mr. Farris.

B Reel movies shown have included Cannibal: The Musical (an early effort from South Park’s Trey Parker), Evil Dead, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Army of Darkness and yes, even The Sound of Music.

This season, the cheese-o-meter revs up a notch with movies like Werewolves on Wheels, Night of the Living Dead and Ed Wood’s Glen or Glenda. Mr. Farris also plans to show some local filmmakers’ works, short films and obscure music videos. “None of these are scary, really, and even kids can watch them.”

About the only movie Mr. Farris refuses to show is Jaws. Actually he did consider it. “We thought it would be a hoot with people swimming in our pool while watching the shark attack. But that might not be in the best taste (except to the hungry shark).”

The Belmont Hotel is historically cool.

The whole drive-in inspiration is also tied to The Belmont’s historic origins and retro hip-modern design. Located high on a stone bluff in Oak Cliff—about 5 minutes from downtown Dallas—the Belmont was arguably the first motor court hotel built in Texas, in 1946. “The Belmont Motor Court, as it was then called, was the be-all, end-all of motor hotels,” relates Mr. Farris. “It even opened with a high-end fashion show.”

The hotel has been renovated as an urban escape, complete with award-winning lush gardens and fountains. It boasts one of the most exhilarating views of the Dallas skyline, especially when the sunset is reflected onto the hotel from the downtown buildings.

So live a little, laugh a little and scream a little at the Belmont Hotel’s B Reel movies. It’s too quirky to miss!
